Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and American Evolution Launch the Virginia History Trails Mobile App

May 22, 2018

How many times have you driven along a major highway in Virginia, noticed a marker that tells the story of a significant event or figure in our state or nation’s past, and wish that you could locate that same spot again later to learn more? On May 14, Virginia’s 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced the launch of the Virginia History Trails mobile app, which includes the locations and descriptions of more than 400 stories and 200 historic sites, as well as 20 thematic trails across the Commonwealth. The app content was curated by the Library of the Virginia and Virginia Humanities.

This summer, travelers, families, Virginia residents and history lovers will be able to uncover the incredible events, figures, and moments that influenced the evolution of today’s America. Virginia History Trails is an easy-to-use app that puts 400 years of Virginia and American history at your fingertips. Using your phone’s GPS feature, Virginia History Trails turns your immediate surroundings into a live history lesson. You can click anywhere on the map under the “Near Me” category and instantly get an in-depth description of dozens of sites in your vicinity, along with explanations of their importance to Virginia’s history. Users can also create their own profiles, “check-in” at sites to receive badges and issue updates on social media using #VAHistoryTrails. The app also provides information about the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution events and announcements.

The 20 themed trails that appear on the app include:

  • African American
  • American Revolution
  • Citizenship
  • Civil Rights
  • Civil War
  • Conflicts
  • Culture
  • Education
  • Entrepreneurship

  • Immigration
  • Innovation
  • Military
  • Preservation
  • Presidents
  • Religious Liberty
  • Representative Government
  • Resistance
  • Virginia Indians
  • Women

Virginia History Trails is one of many legacy projects of the 2019 Commemoration. The app shares dozens of untold stories that have been excluded from history books. Virginia has played a critical role in the creation of the United States since the year 1619, when English, African, and Virginia Indian culture collided for the first time at the Jamestown Colony. The Virginia History Trails app uses technology to tell a more inclusive and authentic narrative of Virginia and America’s history.

The Virginia History Trails app is now available for download in the app store and Google Play.
