Terry E. Brown: Fort Monroe continues educational outreach

KNOWING THE history of a nation, a people, or a culture is crucial to understanding the past and also the present. This knowledge provides a deeper appreciation for the struggles, the cross-cultural influences, and the journey that those who came before us endured and how they influenced our current state.

As a 28-year veteran of the National Park Service, I have spent decades sharing important and authentic stories of the sites I serve. However, my current role as the superintendent of Fort Monroe National Monument in Hampton has allowed me to inform the public about a history that has never been given a proper voice — the 1619 first African landing in English North America and the indelible impact that this pivotal event had not only in Hampton, but on today’s United States.
