Students brought story of the Norfolk 17 to life for a history class

Before four Maury High students started researching the Norfolk 17 for a class project, what they knew about the black students who integrated the city’s schools was limited.

It’d been mentioned in history classes before, the teens said. But it’s one thing to read about something. It’s another to meet Patricia Turner, one of the 17, and hear her describe how white teachers wore gloves to avoid touching her papers, how classmates taunted her and people spit in her hair.

“It opened a whole new experience for us,” junior Javier Miranda-Castro said. “We could see it through her eyes.”
