The Great Charter and the General Assembly: Founding a Legacy in 1619 Explores the origins of Virginia’s General Assembly in the Great Charter of 1618, which abolished martial law, allowed private ownership of property, and authorized the governor to summon the colony’s first General Assembly. Sponsored by American Evolution 2019, this exhibition traces Virginia’s legacy of representative government in the establishment of the United States.
