400th Commemorative Ceremony of the First African Landing

Commemorate 400 years of African American History with American Evolution at the 400th Commemorative Ceremony of the First African Landing.

The 400th Commemorative Ceremony of the First African Landing will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24 in Continental Park at Fort Monroe.

Greetings and remarks from special guests will be shared, along with a performance from the I.C. Norcom High School Choir from Portsmouth, Va.

Special guests include:

Experience a reading of an original poem by poet, author, activist and educator, Nikki Giovanni

 

 

 

Hear remarks from changemaker, CNN political contributor and host of The Van Jones Show on CNN, Van Jones

Stay for the rest of the day and enjoy cultural demonstrations, Black cultural tours, living history demonstrations, children’s activities, musical performances and more in Continental Park.

First African Landing Commemorative Weekend will be held August 22-25 at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in English-occupied North America at Point Comfort in 1619.
