Virginia is home to an intriguing history and a bright future, and we believe that every member of our state’s school communities can be inspired by Virginia’s past challenges and successes.

The Commonwealth of Virginia and the 2019 Commemoration invite every school community in the Commonwealth to engage with the 2019 Commemoration through the 2019 Commemoration Schools campaign. Schools can choose from our ideas, or create their own projects and activities. Whether you are a principal, classroom teacher, a media specialist, or division leader, there are numerous ways for you to participate! Participation is open to every public or private school or homeschool community in the Commonwealth. (K-12).

Our Mission:

The “2019 Schools” program will engage Virginia students, educators, and staff with the themes of the commemoration—Democracy, Diversity, and Opportunity—to increase pride in Virginia’s history and future among the state’s young emerging leaders.

What is American Evolution?

The 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, honors the 400th anniversary of key historical events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 that continue to influence America today. The year 1619 was a pivotal year in the establishment of the first permanent English Colony in North America. It was the year of the first representative legislative assembly in the New World, the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America, the recruitment of English women in significant numbers, the first official English Thanksgiving in North America, and the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of the Virginia colony.
