Visit by Speaker Bercow of the House of Commons

John S. Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, visited Virginia during a spring trip to Washington, D.C. He was welcomed to the Capitol by the 2019 Commemoration co-chairs Speaker M. Kirkland Cox and Senator Thomas K. Norment, Jr. for a program organized in collaboration with Clerk of the House of Delegates G. Paul Nardo and Clerk of the Senate Susan Clarke Schaar. Upon his arrival, Speaker Bercow was given a tour of the historic Virginia Capitol by Speaker Cox, Senator Norment, Clerk Schaar, Clerk Nardo, and 2019 Commemoration Executive Director Kathy J. Spangler. Preceded by the mace of the House of Delegates, the Jamestown Settlement Honor Guard, and the Virginia Capitol Police Honor Guard, Speaker Bercow processed to the House of Delegates chamber where he gave a presentation on the nature of the relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, and reflected on his memorable experiences as Speaker of the House of Commons. After his formal remarks, Speaker Bercow joined Speaker Cox and Senator Norment for a lively dialogue on democracy and civic engagement moderated by Dr. Robert Holsworth, a prominent political analyst.
