400th Commemorative Ceremony of the First Official English Thanksgiving

The 400th anniversary of the First Official English Thanksgiving served as the finale event of the commemoration on December 4, 2019 at Jamestown Settlement. Stephen R. Adkins, Sr., Chief of the Chickahominy Indian Tribe; Graham Woodlief; and historian Rex Ellis, represented the original three cultures in 1619 Virginia: Virginia Indians, English, and African. Speakers shared reflections on Thanksgiving traditions past and present. First Lady Pamela Northam provided a special message for the large public audience attending. The keynote presenter was Michelle Gielan, best-selling Author, former CBS Morning News Anchor, and Executive Producer of “The Happiness Advantage” on PBS. She offered a message that highlighted the many personal and communal benefits of living with an attitude of gratitude and happiness.
