What is “March to Mother’s Day”?

From March 1 until Mother’s Day (May 14), the Women’s Monument Commission is offering a very special opportunity for you to contribute to the completion of the Virginia Women’s Monument and honor the important women in your life through our “March to Mother’s Day” campaign.

For a small contribution, you will receive one or several printable digital certificates from the Virginia Capitol Foundation, honoring the woman or women you choose to celebrate. At higher contribution levels, the Foundation will hand-write a personal message of your choosing on a beautifully designed card to be sent to the woman or women of your choice, and their names will be featured on the monument’s “digital wall” in perpetuity.

About the Virginia Women’s Monument

Since 1987, March has been celebrated in the United States as Women’s History Month, designed to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of women in American society. In the words of President Jimmy Carter:

From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.

In an effort to ensure that these women who shaped Virginia, and by extension America, receive the recognition they so justly deserve, the Virginia Capitol Foundation has begun the development of the Virginia Women’s Monument, “Voices from the Garden.” This monument will be the first of its kind to recognize the full range of women’s achievements in America over the course of the past 400 years. Within the monument’s oval garden foundation, twelve bronze statues of significant Virginia women,  drawn from various time periods and cultures, will be featured. A glass panel etched with the names of other noteworthy Virginia women will enclose one side of the monument, while a bench listing milestones in Virginia women’s history will enclose the other.

Featured Women:

The monument will be a thought-provoking, interactive experience, complementing the more traditional monuments on Richmond’s Capitol Square. Visitors walking amongst the statues will be able to utilize a mobile application to learn more about these women’s achievements and their stories. Ultimately, the Virginia Women’s Monument will inspire current and future generations to emulate and surpass the achievements of the women who came before them.
