2017 Virginia Thanksgiving Festival

November 5 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

On December 4, 1619, 38 settlers led by Captain John Woodlief arrived at Berkeley Plantation from Bristol, England. Following instructions given by the colony’s investors, Captain Woodlief led the settlers in prayer and ordained the date of their arrival as a holy day of Thanksgiving. This event marked the first official observance of Thanksgiving in the English colonies. Today the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival continues to fulfill the orders of Berkeley’s investors almost 400 years later by “annually and perpetually” celebrating the arrival of Berkeley’s first settlers with a day of history, food, and fun.

In addition to a reenactment of the 1619 landing of Captain Woodlief and his men at Berkeley Plantation, the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival includes colonial games, music, and storytelling by costumed reenactors, as well as a corn maze and a parade. Vendors from across multiple cultures will showcase arts, crafts, and jewelry, and mansion tours will be available from throughout the day. The festival also incorporates the heritage of Virginia Indian thanksgivings through a living-history program and performances by the Chickahominy Tribal Dancers.
